Why is China called China

You have probably heard that sometimes in relation to China they say - The Celestial Empire. We explain why it happened so historically.

Where did the name come from?

The very name "Celestial" has an interesting origin. According to the main religion of China - Confucianism - the emperor of the country is the henchman of Heaven on Earth, and the entire territory of the planet is subject to him. Therefore, it is called the Celestial Empire, as it is literally under the sky.

And why China?

Moreover, the Chinese in ancient times believed that there was only one civilization on Earth - China. And when they mentioned the Celestial Empire, they, of course, meant the whole world. However, over time, when people learned about other countries, this name was assigned only to China.
